In Britain most schools have uniforms, both private (which we call public schools) and 'state schools'

Well, public schools are often called 'independent schools' nowadays.
Most people go to state schools ('comprehensives'), though there are different kinds - there are even a few grammar schools left open in some parts of the country.

Nah - grammar schools are the remains of the old system set up after WW2. Basically, everyone did a test at 11. The top 10% went to grammar schools and then uni. Everyone else was screwed.
