The truth about private schools

Great article in The Observer today about plans to mix state and private schools in strange ‘super schools’. The idea sounds cool but wacky and I doubt anything will come of it – but what caught my eye was a nice quote from a certain Barbara Harrison, chair of the private Girls’ Day School Trust.

‘The parents of children at private schools are paying a lot specifically to ensure their youngsters escape certain things – things they would almost certainly be caught up in if this idea comes to fruition.’

So there you have it. The lie that parents are somehow forced to send their kids to private schools because they only want “the best for my child” or some other bullshit has been exposed. Private schools are about ‘escaping certain things’ – any guesses as to what these could be? The wrong kind of people, perhaps?

Some people would think I was being frightfully rude to construct a sentence containing the words elitist, snobs and enemies of society, so I won’t.

The truth about private schools

I suppose the parents want their kids to escape from bullying if their likely to get it as well.
We have a private school near here as well, although i don’t go to it!

    (BTW, email updates are handy!)

  2. Red Dalek says:

Heh, somehow I suspect there is just as much bullying in private schools – they just have more of an incentive to cover it up!

  3. Edward T. says:

Like single parent minority families sending their non-catholic kids to Catholic Schools in order to get them out of public schools filled with other kids of single parent minority families, even when the family sending the kids are not Catholic?

  4. Red Dalek says:

If that happens, then it’s sad. On the other hand, I do not support any form of religious schools – Cathlolic or otherwise. Dividing up communities has never proved to be a good idea in the past…

  5. Edward T. says:

So you’re in favor in leaving the kids in failing schools? Better that all the kids have a sub-standard education than allowing parents the option of working extra-jobs in order to get their kids out?

  6. Red Dalek says:

Selective schools are the real ‘failing schools’. They are also the vultures sucking resources and good will out of the state sector. There is no evidence that a comprehensive education is ‘sub-standard’, in my experience it’s one of the richest experiences you can have if done properly.

If you go to private school, you are depriving state schools of the ability to improve.

I think that idea is only good for colleges, and at least in the states, has been instituted in some places. For elementary through high school, i dont think its needed

MY friend Crusader 41 was Muslim and went to a Christian skool AND was BULLIED by her BEST FRIEND.. i mean really thats cruel… but i think they want to get away from schools like QPCS full of SOME CHAVS disrupting Everybody…. did u hear a 13 yr old girl got arrested for throwing a snowball and smashed a car window AND her mum was there all the time? I mean thats a bit harsh putting her in a cell 4 a few hours giving her a start of a criminal record.. and most burglars dont get that much!

  9. Red Dalek says:

You’d have thought the police would want to talk to her mum as well!

Your friend’s story is really depressing – hope she’s OK now. Some people are just twats whatever school they go to, unfortunately.

  10. Crusader42 and a 1/2 says:
